What to do with back pain in the lumbar region

The feeling of back pain in the lower back has been experienced by many in their lives. Sometimes it is enough to spend a short time in an unusual or uncomfortable position and discomfort begins to be felt, and then the lumbar region begins to hurt. If such pain occurs periodically, then there are specific reasons for this. Most often they are associated with diseases of various segments of the spine and become signals of disorders that require treatment. To answer the question of why the lower back hurts and what you can do about it, you must first determine the cause of the pain.

cause and effect

Back pain in the lumbar region

In medicine, there are two types of pain that occurs in the lumbar region:

  1. primary syndrome;
  2. secondary syndrome.

In the first case, the dystrophic changes in the spine are to blame.

  • Arthrosis, more precisely, its form is spondylarthrosis. The condition affects the intervertebral joints, which are responsible for movement and mobility of the entire spine.
  • Osteochondrosis is a common lesion of the bone and cartilage tissues: the intervertebral disc, adjacent vertebrae. It's dystrophic. With the development of osteochondrosis, spondylosis develops.

The secondary syndrome is the most common, since its causes are much more diverse.

  • Scoliosis is a leading cause of low back pain. Every fourth person has problems with back pain of varying severity due to the curvature of the vertebrae.
  • Osteoporosis, osteomalacia - these and other bone lesions caused by metabolic disorders are also a very common cause of back pain.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and inflammatory diseases that are not infectious in nature may rank third as causes of low back pain.
  • Infectious diseases such as brucellosis, tuberculosis can also cause severe pain. There is no exception to the causes either - swelling of the vertebrae or damage (tear, fracture).

Back pain in the lower back what to do? If you are afflicted by low back pain for the first time and the cause of it is not yet clear, you do not need to get carried away with self-diagnosis and certainly not with self-treatment. Only a doctor can diagnose the disease. Therefore, if you experience such pain, especially if it recurs or is acute, you should immediately consult a therapist.

What hurts

Lower back pain can be classified as either acute or chronic. To accurately describe your symptoms in the doctor's office, you need to understand how you're feeling.

It is often possible to observe displaced pain that patients mistake for lumbar pain. In fact, the source of pain arises in the internal organs and its sensation is transmitted to the lower back. Translation occurs most often from the pelvic organs, as well as pain in the pancreas or kidneys. Problems in the colon and painful tumors behind the peritoneum can also give the impression that a person has lower back pain.

how it hurts

  • Aching pains, accompanied by periodic numbness of the lower extremities or simply weakness in them, intermittent claudication is possible. Such pains are characterized by spondylosis. Bony outgrowths narrow the spinal canal. An urgent investigation is required.
  • The pain is accompanied by a temporary restriction of movement, which usually occurs in the morning after sleeping. The nature of the pain is pulling. This is how the first symptoms of Bechterew's disease can manifest themselves. As the disease progresses, the spine in the breastbone begins to curve, which progresses. An X-ray examination is required. Similar symptoms can also be caused by psoriatic arthritis.
  • Scoliosis itself does not cause severe pain in the lower back or other parts of the back, but a chest deformity combined with a vertebral deformity can cause pathological changes in internal organs that transmit back pain. The more the vertebrae are twisted, the more it hurts. For relief, doctors advise sleeping on your back, doing physical exercises and getting a massage.
  • Osteoarthritis causes a dull ache and body stiffness in and around the lower back, especially after lying down it can be difficult to get up. It is also possible to temporarily block the joints in a certain state and, if the vertebrae are affected by the disease, feel that they "rub" against each other. This is a dangerous disease, the more successful the treatment, the sooner it is started.
  • Osteoporosis is characterized by episodic pain arising from awkward movements and certainly occurring when lifting weights. Causative pain is accompanied by pain in the background, fatigue when walking or after a long stay in a fixed position. Treatment is required at any stage of the disease.
  • With osteomyelitis, there can be severe painful manifestations of an aching nature, concentrated in the lumbar girdle. It is caused by staph and tuberculosis bacteria. X-rays of the bones are taken and skin tests are carried out to find the cause.
  • Persistent lower back pain without other symptoms, but for a long time there may be intradural tumors.
  • Back pain can cause gynecological problems in women and urological problems in men.
  • A typical situation when acute cutting lumbar pain manifests itself is herniated discs. Pain is associated with restricted mobility.

What to do

The pain that arose for unknown reasons is so strong that it is almost unbearable - it is necessary to call an ambulance.

The appearance of pain is the result of an obvious injury (fall, unsuccessful jump, blow, bruise), you should immediately contact a traumatologist or surgeon. A vertebral fracture may not initially cause the patient critical pain, but the consequences are serious. The same applies to cracks.

severe pain in the lumbar region

If the pain is not very disturbing, but occurs periodically or is present fairly constantly as a "background", it is advisable to consult an orthopedist, infectiologist or gastroenterologist, gynecologist or urologist, as well as a proctologist, nephrologist or be examined by a cardiologist.

Specialists in manual therapy, massage, acupuncture, homeopaths and the like can significantly reduce and even completely relieve back pain, but it is advisable to contact them after making an accurate diagnosis and according to the indications of the attending physician.
